He started school this September and we’re still on the waiting list.”“I think it would have made a big difference to him if he had been seen regularly before he started school, it has affected his confidence. I don’t understand why speech therapy is not given more priority.“Early intervention is key in children with speech and language difficulties. More money and extra resources could end up being used on him in primary school, so no-one is saving anything. The children are the losers.”A report released by Inclusion Ireland this week revealed that there were on average 203 children in need of therapy for each speech and language therapist in the Mid West. The report also found that a child’s access to speech and language therapy can depend on where they live, and that many families are availing of private or non-profit therapy providers while awaiting a public service.Carol-Anne Murphy, a lecturer in Speech and Language Therapy at the University of Limerick, said that those figures refer to a subgroup and do not reflect the actual number of therapists working with children in the region, or the number of children accessing services. However, she agrees that there is a need for additional speech and language therapists.“We still need more therapists, that is something that is clear from all the reports that have been compiled. But it’s not just a question of putting in more therapists. What is also required is to look at what happens when children are in the system, that we don’t allow gaps or discontinuity due to therapists going on maternity leave and things like that.“It’s not just a question of taking children off the waiting list, it’s also important to see if they are getting enough intervention over a long enough period of time to meet their needs.”She added that there is still significant demand for places on the course despite the recruitment freeze, but that some graduates have had to emigrate to find work. A sad day for humanity

first_imgGay marriage made legal across USNZ Herald 27 June 2015Gay and lesbian Americans have the same right to marry as any other couples, the U.S. Supreme Court declared Friday in a historic ruling deciding one of America’s most contentious and emotional legal questions. Celebrations and joyful weddings quickly followed states where they had been forbidden. The vote was narrow – 5-4 – but the ruling will put an end to same-sex marriage bans in the 14 states that still maintain them, and provide an exclamation point for breathtaking changes in America’s social norms in recent years. As recently as last October, just over one-third of the states permitted gay marriages.Public acceptance has also shot up in recent years, in stark contrast to the widespread outcry against a 2004 ruling by the high court in Massachusetts legalizing same-sex marriage there, prompting several states to ban it and galvanizing conservative voter turnout during George W. Bush’s re-election campaign.Just over a decade later, Justice Anthony Kennedy’s majority opinion was clear and firm: “The court now holds that same-sex couples may exercise the fundamental right to marry. No longer may this liberty be denied to them.”Kennedy’s reading of the ruling elicited tears in the courtroom, euphoria outside and the immediate issuance of marriage licenses to same-sex couples in county offices in Georgia and Texas. In Dallas, Kenneth Denson said he and Gabriel Mendez had been legally married in 2013 in California but “we’re Texans; we want to get married in Texas.”In praise of the decision, President Barack Obama called it “justice that arrives like a thunderbolt.” read more

Gayle plans Test return in 2016 MELBOURNE, Australia (AP): Former West Indies captain Chris Gayle hopes to return to Test cricket next year after a two-year absence. The 36-year-old Gayle told reporters yesterday in Australia, where he is playing in the Twenty20 Big Bash League, that he hopes to be injury-free and able to bolster a struggling West Indies line-up in 2016. He said a back injury had prevented him playing for the West Indies who were mauled by Australia in a Test in Hobart last week, though he continues to play in lucrative Twenty 20 competitions. Gayle said “there’s no way I could have actually been part of that Test team, I’m just coming back from injury. Next year, hopefully, Test cricket is on the agenda.” Australia to add first-class day-night matches MELBOURNE, Australia (AP): Cricket Australia is continuing its push for more day-night Test cricket, scheduling first-class matches under lights at three venues early next year. Get your smart card ID at your nearest bank

first_imgSouth African citizens will be able to apply for their smart card ID cards at Home Affairs kiosks in FNB and Standard Bank branches as part of a pilot project set to start in April 2015.Two of South Africa’s biggest banks – FNB and Standard Bank – had signed a memorandum of understanding with the Department of Home Affairs for the pilot project, Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba said at a media briefing in Cape Town on Tuesday.Nedbank has expressed its willingness to participate, Gigaba said, adding he was hopeful Absa and the South African Post Office would soon join in too.Gigaba said the plan was part of the government’s plans to help make the ID cards accessible to all citizens.“There are several new innovations that are going to be introduced by the department in the course of this and the next financial years to assist South Africans in applying for their Smart ID Cards and passports in an extremely convenient way. Those that are eligible to apply for Smart IDs are pensioners older than 60 years or 16 year-olds.Citizens will be able to submit their application as well as their biometric data via the kiosk at the bank. This includes taking a “biometric photograph”, submitting automated fingerprints and electronic signatures. The minister said it was hoped the innovation would help ease the queues at Home Affairs’ 403 offices, while also delivering a crucial service to citizens more efficiently.TargetThe government plans to convert the more than 38-million citizens with green-coded ID books to Smart ID Cards.“We have issued over 1-million Smart ID Cards in less than a year,” Gigaba said. “We are confident of reaching the target of 1.6-million cards by the end of the 2014/15 financial year.”Deadline for birth registrationThe government was also continuing with its campaign to register children within 30 days of birth in efforts to maintain the integrity of the National Population Register, Gigaba said.“We will cease the process of the late registration of births by 31 December 2015. This critical milestone will ensure that we safeguard our identity, citizenship and secure our population register.”Source: you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? The Dark Figure Of Social Media: What Can Twitter Teach Criminologists?

first_imgTags:#crowdsourcing#Real-Time Web#twitter#web Guide to Performing Bulk Email Verification A Comprehensive Guide to a Content Audit Related Posts The “Dark Figure of Crime” is not, as one would imagine, a London-fog-bedecked, cloak-and-dagger figure slinking down a shadowy alleyway. It sounds very Hollywood, but “The Dark Figure” is simply a term used by statisticians to describe a crime that goes unreported.Serious and even violent crimes go unreported for a myriad of social, political and personal reasons. What does this have to do with Twitter? Criminologists have for years grappled with that dark figure, and while police science research on social media is in its infancy, the ability to compare official and real-time crowdsourced data could change how we research crime.Guest author Laura Madison is the co-founder of the Canadian Association of Police on Social Media. She will be publishing the results of a survey regarding Twitter use by North American and U.K. in the coming weeks. She tweets @org9 and @canadianpolice.Crime that has been reported by victims – a burglary for example – is only a percentage of what is actually occurring in our communities. How do we know? We use what are called social surveys. Some of the survey questions could be: “Have you been the victim of a burglary in the past five years?” and “Did you report it to police?” We then look at the official reported crimes involving burglary and compare that with social survey results. All of this is very interesting but what does this have to do with social media, annotation, metadata and Twitter’s Promoted Tweets? For me as a social scientist on Twitter, there’s an exciting potential for everyone from governments to nonprofits to utilize the power of real-time to hypothesize, design, conduct and finally utilize analytics. If good research design is defined as “the analysis of data in a manner that aims to combine relevance to the research purpose with economy in procedure,” then Twitter’s new promotional platform not only adheres to this principle but advances the potential for rapid-paced and geographically salient research results on just about any topic.Possibilities For Policing AgenciesAs a criminologist I think a lot about how social media can be utilized in my field and in the field of police sciences. We can study attitudes about crime, fear of crime, urban myths, moral panics, laws, legislation, police services, victim impact, sentencing reform, prison reform and restorative justice. We can look at social media studies and compare them to official crime rates and government social surveys, reports and peer-published research and analysis. We can do research around issues such as the Facebook panic button and other social media applications directed at sex offender detection, and importantly we can elicit responses from those who currently use social media.Policing agencies, for example, could use their annual communications budgets to purchase a number of Promotional Tweets to, for instance, alert the public about a wanted person or request information from targeted geographic population. They could use polls to gauge performance, community perceptions, satisfaction and reform. Then they can use the associated data for back-end analytics and to illustrate what I call user-to-user “resonance chains” that show where their tweets went and who retweeted them, and lay out this info for further proactive planning. For a good example of this in action check out @vpdcanada, @trafficservices and @deputysloly; a further good source for police information on social media is @cops2point0.What Must Happen NextWith all of the positive out of the way, let’s look at some issues that may need to be addressed before some of what I outlined can come to fruition. I will also introduce some of my ideas for application development.First comes privacy wherein an application that we could build would gather relevant data such as age, location, education level, etc., but would hide identifying information by assigning a code number for those wishing to contribute to social science research.Second, ethically acceptable research policy beings with the establishment of a clear and fair agreement between the investigator/agency and research participant that clarifies the responsibility of both. Professional researchers and agencies may request a release before research is conducted. We could make an application for all sorts of legal and research releases for use on social media, could we not?Third, random sampling is a requirement for many experimental designs. How can we do this on Twitter? Perhaps this can be achieved by the creation of an application that can do random samples or shuffling of willing participants.Fourth, not everyone who may want to purchase promoted Tweets knows how to design an effective 140-character promotion, so how can we assist? Again, create an application or an easy editor/style guide that enriches what Twitter might already have.A Final NoteAs Twitter rolls out its platform for Promoted Tweets, I encourage my peers and social media scholars to get to know what they look like and begin to imagine new ways this could be harnessed for social change as well as for promotional value. I invite further discussion about these are ideas, and I’m hoping that together through innovation we can make Twitter a socially and scientifically accepted tool with which people can do valid and welcomed research. This is the Creepy, Super Cool Future of Smartphones & Social Networks

first_imgRelated Posts There’s very little gray area on this one: You’re either completely excited by the potential for built-in facial recognition combined with smartphones and social networks, or your entirely creeped out and afraid for the future of the planet. The future is nearly here and I, for one, welcome our new overlords, who today come to us in the form of a Silicon Valley company called Viewdle that we first wrote about last October. Read on to find out how they plan to make what you see above a reality. A Comprehensive Guide to a Content Audit The Dos and Don’ts of Brand Awareness Videos Facebook is Becoming Less Personal and More Pro… Last October, Viewdle raised $10 million and told us that it’s primary function would be to assist with tagging photos on smartphones before they’re even uploaded to sites like Facebook, that way they wouldn’t get lost in the cloud. Today, however, Austin-based PSFK Salon writes that the company was out and about at the Mobile World Congress showing off a much deeper integration, wherein its visual analysis technology is used to link faces with social media. Viewdle sits between the camera and the user analysing faces in the camera stream, identifying them, then offering links to Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, and other social media platforms. A user can identify and tag people in pictures & videos then pass the information to their social networks. As they tag others the software learns to recognize them, and can even share these new visual profiles with other users. The live view also offers an augmented reality tagging overlay that reveals information about the people around you.According to Viewdle’s website, a number of implementations are on the way, from ViewdleFaces to ViewdlePlaces to ViewdleGames. For now, however, Viewdle Uploader – a desktop program – is the only thing available. Its mobile apps, which it says are coming soon, stand apart from other recognition programs with one big distinction. They do all of the facial recognition procession locally, on the device, instead of outsourcing that functionality to the cloud. What do you say? Are you stoked or completely creeped out? I know that I could use a little help once in a while and certainly wouldn’t mind if a smartphone app could help me out. Maybe we’re friends on Twitter already, but I’m blanking on a name or a context. Would it be so bad if I pointed my phone across the room and figured it out?Fine. For now, I’ll suffer in peace, wander over and admit that, once again, I have forgotten your name.
