Despite not having a winning program since 2015, USC undoubtedly had the best recruiting class out of any school in California in 2018. The Trojans landed three Top 100 recruits in 2018, whereas UCLA and Stanford University each had one. If the program can continue to recruit talented players, there should be no reason why the Trojans have disappointing seasons. USC might be considered a football school, but as that program sees its own struggles, the Trojan baseball tradition should not be overlooked. The school has won 12 national championships — twice as many as any other school. USC has produced 113 MLB players in its history, more than any other NCAA program in the country. Success should be expected when it comes to USC baseball. This season will be critical for head coach Dan Hubbs. In his six years at USC, Hubbs has had a losing record of 163-171. He has had talented rosters over that timespan, with a number of players getting drafted to the MLB. He is also a successful recruiter, having convinced players drafted out of high school to play for the Trojans instead. USC primarily recruits players from within its home state, and, in many cases, it’s an ideal destination for talented players in Southern California. Because of its history as a dominant team, the program ultimately has the first choice when it comes to selecting talent out of California, and the talent pool to pick from is large — there should be no excuses for a lack of talent from in the state. California is a hub for baseball. In many states, baseball players are limited to playing ball only in the spring and summer due to seasonal weather patterns. In sunny California, young athletes are able to practice and play baseball year-round. Thus, players get twice as much practice as their East Coast peers, which ultimately should enhance overall play. Robby Aronson is a sophomore writing about sports. His column, “The Bottom Line,” runs every other Wednesday. Hubbs is an intelligent coach. He speaks eloquently about the game, and the players in the dugout seem to like and respect his coaching methods. However, he doesn’t always get the most out of his star players. Take Lars Nootbaar, for example. Nootbaar was expected to be a key player for the Trojans last season, yet he didn’t reach the levels of expectation that surrounded him. Nootbaar, who was drafted in the eighth round by the St. Louis Cardinals, had a .249 batting average last season. California also has a great baseball history and tradition, with five current MLB teams — one out of every six baseball teams is based in California. And those teams are largely successful — the Dodgers’ and Giants’ track records over the past decade are enough proof. After a number of disappointing seasons, the NCAA quite rightly did not include the Trojans in its preseason top 25 teams, despite the talent of the university’s recruits. The players are talented enough to change the team’s overall perception, but it’s ultimately up to them and the coaching staff to unleash USC baseball’s full potential. When the NCAA baseball preseason rankings were released, USC — unsurprisingly — did not make top 25 best teams in the country. For one of the country’s winningest baseball programs in college baseball history, not making the preseason top 25 is a clear sign that the team needs significant improvement. Despite their great baseball tradition, the Trojans haven’t finished a season above .500 since 2015. The bottom line? USC baseball must work to regain its former glory.

Scientists have not only made the production of induced pluripotent stem cells much more efficient, but also have made them just as capable as embryonic stem cells of being able to produce any cell type. They keep getting better and better: induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPSCs. How’s this sound: “made with near perfect efficiency” (Nature News). Science Daily adds that the process has sped up from 1% to 100%. It’s gone from a “frustratingly slow” process in the past to a technique now promising rapid production of the pluripotent cells for ethically-safe regenerative medicine. Researchers at the Weizmann Institute found a protein acting like a “molecular brake” that was holding them back. Instead of getting 1 iPSC cell out of a hundred in four weeks, every cell can be made pluripotent within one week thanks to the new discovery. Science Magazine cautioned that removal of that protein will have to be tested for other effects, but the news is hopeful. There’s even more hope, Science Daily said:As an added bonus, since the cells all underwent the reprograming at the same rate, the scientists will now be able, for the first time, to actually follow it step by step and reveal its mechanisms of operation. Hanna points out that his team’s achievement was based on research into the natural pathways of embryonic development: “Scientists investigating reprograming can benefit from a deeper understanding of how embryonic stem cells are produced in nature. After all, nature still makes them best, in the most efficient manner.“Skip the side dish: What if iPSCs could be induced while still inside the body? That would skip the petri dish altogether. Scientists at the Spanish National Cancer Research Center have done it, Science Daily says: induced “embryonic” stem cells right inside living mice, meaning that they are not just “pluripotent” (able to turn into many cell types) but “totipotent” (able to turn into any cell type), just like the embryonic kind.Researchers have also discovered that these embryonic stem cells, obtained directly from the inside of the organism, have a broader capacity for differentiation than those obtained via in vitro culture. Specifically, they have the characteristics of totipotent cells: a primitive state never before obtained in a laboratory. What this suggests is that cells in living tissue could be induced into their embryonic state and coaxed into organs to rebuild them. “We can now start to think about methods for inducing regeneration locally and in a transitory manner for a particular damaged tissue,” a team member said. Additionally, the induced cells can be removed for study in the petri dish if needed.Though treatments inside the body are a ways off, this achievement offers hope for amazing cures down the road, coaxing the body’s own cells to rebuild and restore damaged organs. PhysOrg described how the body uses 3-D signals to guide stem cells into position. Mastering that code will allow doctors to put the cells right where they are needed.Untold numbers of human embryos have been spared thanks to the groundbreaking achievement of Shinya Yamanaka in 2006, who figured out how to make iPSCs (8/25/06). The progress since then has been accelerating, as these new reports show. Just as good as embryonic stem cells without the ethical infractions, iPSCs are the cells to watch in the coming years. Imagine restoring hearts, bones, livers, and much more with your own cells! You can help by urging your representatives to support research with adult stem cells, and to deny funding for research with human embryos. iPSCs sound almost too good to be true; but so far, they are true, and are getting better with each new discovery. And what are we discovering? Not evolution, but the sophisticated design in living cells. (Visited 23 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0
15 July 2008The business process outsourcing and offshoring (BPO&O) industry represents a window of opportunity for South Africa to create jobs and boost economic growth, says Trade and Industry Minister Mandisi Mpahlwa.Speaking to BuaNews at a national BPO&O conference in Durban last week, Mpahlwa said the industry “provides an opportunity to create many, many jobs for young unemployed South Africans with little effort, because one needs only a basic matric.“You are able to provide short-term training that will equip them with the basic skills required in, for example, a call centre. In that way you are able to soak up a lot of young people.“When these young people get these skills and get to work in that environment, they soon develop ideas about other things they can do”, Mpahlwa added. “So very often people, upon developing these ideas, migrate into other fields of employment, and so there is quite a turnover, allowing us to bring people into the industry on a constant basis.”South Africa’s value propositionMpahlwa told delegates at the conference that the BPO industry, which has only been active in South Africa for about a decade, already employs in the region of 100 000 people – yet could employ far more.“We find that in the Philippines the BPO&O industry has grown from under 40 000 employees in 2004 to over 350 000 today. Yet in many respects we could and should represent a more competitive value proposition.“This is because we have many attractive features for investors, including existing levels of sophistication in the three BPO focus industry sectors of financial services, insurance and telecommunications, with additional advantages in our quality of talent pool, regulations and infrastructure.”One of the biggest booms in South Africa’s economy had been felt in the services sector, Mpahlwa said, and the BPO&O industry would work with this sector to contribute to the growth of the economy.“And, as the cost of telecoms come down, we are becoming more and more competitive.”Industry poised to grow globallyGlobally, he said, the sector is expected to have a value of around US$50-billion in 2008 and to grow by 50% per annum over the next three to four years, creating an additional 3-million direct jobs worldwide.“However, it is also anticipated that there will be some unmet demand, as existing centres will not be able to maintain or grow their supply for a number of reasons,” including talent and infrastructure “bottlenecks” in traditional BPO centres such as the Philippines. At the same time, the global increase in prices had forced many companies to cut costs, particularly in the United States, creating an added incentive for businesses to shift certain functions, such as after-sales service and data processing – overseas.“What this means is that a window of opportunity exists for us to further develop the sector in our country, and to do so as rapidly as possible,” the minister said.“Certainly the evidence exists that rapid development is possible,” he added, noting that R658-million in investment value had been attracted, and more than 25 000 direct and indirect jobs had been created, since the launch of the government’s BPO&O support programme in 2007.This programme includes a BPO&O investment incentive comprising an investment grant of between R37 000 and R60 000 per seat, and a Training and Skills Support Grant – to help cover the costs of company-specific training – of up to R12 000 per agent.Mpahlwa said the department would be looking to raise these incentives further still.Advantages in rural areasSouth Africa’s BPO&O strategy also aims to encourage companies to locate facilities in some of the country’s more far-flung rural areas.“These areas have abundant labour, a low cost of doing business, as well as existing physical and telecommunications infrastructure,” Mpahlwa told BuaNews, adding: “You will find many of these areas have buildings that are appropriate for the industry but are unused.”The department had identified 22 municipalities in which BPO&O centres could be located, leaving it up to individual municipalities to “make a case for themselves”.“We don’t force companies to do this, but we do make available the information, and we have begun to see some successes,” the minister said, with a number of call centres having started up within targeted municipalities in North West province, the Northern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo.Source: BuaNews
