Hawaiian Electric Plans $150 Million Battery Storage Investment

first_img FacebookTwitterLinkedInEmailPrint分享Pacific Business News:Hawaiian Electric Company will invest close to $150 million in two new energy storage projects on Oahu. The Honolulu-based utility on Wednesday announced plans for two gird-scale projects on the island’s west side. They include a 20 megawatt system to support the 20 MW West Loch solar system, which is currently under construction at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam’s West Loch Annex, and a 100 MW system at Hawaiian Electric’s Campbell Industrial Park generating station.“These projects will improve resilience and reliability while helping stabilize costs for our customers,” Ron Cox, Hawaiian Electric senior vice president for operations, said in a statement. “As Hawaiian Electric progresses toward 100 percent renewable energy, these storage projects will reduce our fossil fuel use by enabling more solar and wind integration into the grid.”At West Loch, the utility plans to own and operate a 20 MW battery capable of storing 80 megawatt-hour of energy at a cost of $43.5 million. The solar-plus-battery project is being built on land leased from the U.S. Navy. The company said it hopes to start construction by October 2019 with the system in service by February 2020. Due to the storage component, the project will be eligible for the federal Investment Tax Credit that will save customers 30 percent of the cost. The Campbell Industrial Park project is also expected to start construction in October 2019 with the battery set to enter service by October 2020 at an estimated cost of $104 million. The two battery storage projects will reduce the need for conventional, oil-fired generation during the evening peak and at night, reducing fossil fuel use and lowering carbon emissions, according to the utility.More: Hawaiian Electric Company Will Invest Close To $150 Million In Two New Energy Storage Projects On Oahu Hawaiian Electric Plans $150 Million Battery Storage Investmentlast_img read more

Fall Sports

first_imgYesterday I talked about attending local high school and college football games.  If you do not enjoy football, there are many other fall sports going on that would certainly enjoy your attendance.  Most schools now have boys tennis, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls soccer, volleyball, and girls golf.  You can enjoy these sports both at the middle school and high school levels. If you are a senior citizen, many schools offer a reduced ticket price for those who want to attend these activities.  Since there are many schools in the local area, you can attend these without having to drive long distances like college activities require.  If you enjoy golf, Batesville High School has Madison McCreary who just set the school record for low score.  You can attend most golf outings free of charge.Oldenburg Academy and Batesville High School both have ranked soccer teams.  Cross Country meets can be run in less than 25 minutes, and again, BHS and OA have excellent teams to follow.  BHS football has not lost a regular season game in two seasons, and Milan’s football team is off a good start.  BHS boys tennis is hoping to win another sectional title.Take your pick and enjoy a sport!last_img read more

Get your smart card ID at your nearest bank

first_imgSouth African citizens will be able to apply for their smart card ID cards at Home Affairs kiosks in FNB and Standard Bank branches as part of a pilot project set to start in April 2015.Two of South Africa’s biggest banks – FNB and Standard Bank – had signed a memorandum of understanding with the Department of Home Affairs for the pilot project, Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba said at a media briefing in Cape Town on Tuesday.Nedbank has expressed its willingness to participate, Gigaba said, adding he was hopeful Absa and the South African Post Office would soon join in too.Gigaba said the plan was part of the government’s plans to help make the ID cards accessible to all citizens.“There are several new innovations that are going to be introduced by the department in the course of this and the next financial years to assist South Africans in applying for their Smart ID Cards and passports in an extremely convenient way. Those that are eligible to apply for Smart IDs are pensioners older than 60 years or 16 year-olds.Citizens will be able to submit their application as well as their biometric data via the kiosk at the bank. This includes taking a “biometric photograph”, submitting automated fingerprints and electronic signatures. The minister said it was hoped the innovation would help ease the queues at Home Affairs’ 403 offices, while also delivering a crucial service to citizens more efficiently.TargetThe government plans to convert the more than 38-million citizens with green-coded ID books to Smart ID Cards.“We have issued over 1-million Smart ID Cards in less than a year,” Gigaba said. “We are confident of reaching the target of 1.6-million cards by the end of the 2014/15 financial year.”Deadline for birth registrationThe government was also continuing with its campaign to register children within 30 days of birth in efforts to maintain the integrity of the National Population Register, Gigaba said.“We will cease the process of the late registration of births by 31 December 2015. This critical milestone will ensure that we safeguard our identity, citizenship and secure our population register.”Source: SAnews.gov.zaWould you like to use this article in your publication or on your website?
